IrfanView:

The Swiss Army Knife of Image Editors


Do you need a tool for screen capture? Do you ever want to create a slideshow, use your favorite tunes for background music, burn it to a CD, and share it? Do you need to crop a picture or change it's size? enhance the color or contrast? How about a free tool to accomplish these chores and much, much more? Click on a color in the main window and the title bar gives you the cursor location, the RGB color formula, and the HTML color formula—a huge help for color matching.

You can control your scanner or printer from IrfanView and accomplish all the standard image editing functions. It will display nearly any image format, and play nearly any multimedia format. And What is great if the file is in for wrong format for your needs you can probably load it into IrfanView and save it in the format that you do need. When saving in JPG format, it allows you to select the amount of compression for the file. (Smaller files mean lower quality.) This product will even save images as icons, a feat not many image editors can do.

This program comes with a thumbnail viewer that can be loaded separately from the main program. It will display a folder full of images of almost any format, and you can control the size of the images displayed with no adjustment to the file size.

You can also add text to to your picture if you wish, but it becomes part of the image. It does not ride above the image on a separate layer, so you can't edit it later. Unfortunately, handling layers is one of the few features not supported by this product.
