COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MERCERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44:
5 balls of No. 1 White.
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).
GAUGE: 3 sc and 1 puff st make ¾ inch; 4 rows make ¾ inch.

Starting at back edge, ch 33.

1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.

2nd and 3rd rows: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

4th row: Work in puff st pattern as for Bath Mat & Scrap Basket Cover Pattern.(See this pattern below.) Ch 1, turn.

5th row: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

6th row: Repeat 4th row.

7th row: Make dc, half dc and sc in first st (2 sts increased at beginning of row), sc in each st across, making sc, half dc and dc in last sc (2 sts increased at end of row). Ch 1, turn.

8th to 14th rows incl: Continue to work in pattern, increasing 2 sts at beginning and end of each row (adding puff sts at both ends of puff st rows as needed to keep pattern—64 sts on 14th row).

15th row: 2 sc in first st, sc in each st across, 2 sc in last st. Ch 1, turn (1 st increased at both ends of row).

16th row: Work in pattern without increasing.

17th to 24th rows inch: Repeat 15th and 16th rows alternately 4 more times (74 sts on 24th row). Work without increasing until piece measures 9 inches in all. Then dec 1 st at both ends of every sc row until piece measures 13½ inches—to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc. Now work off 3 sts as 1 st at both ends of every row until piece measures 15½ inches in all. Break off.

BORDER — 1st rnd: Attach thread to opposite side of starting chain, sc in each ch across, sc closely around cover. Join to first sc.

2nd rnd: Ch 4, * skip 1 sc, dc in next sc, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd ch of ch-4. Break off.

CORD — Using thread double, make a chain 10 inches longer than outer edge of cover. Starting at center back, lace through ch-1 sps.

Mat measures 24 x 36 inches
COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MERCERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44:
    24 balls of No. 1 White for Mat
    8 balls for Scrap Basket.
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).
A scrap basket 8 inches in diameter at top and bottom and 12½ inches in depth.
GAUGE: 3 sc and 1 puff st make ¾ inch; 4 rows make 34 inch.

To start, ch 132 for Mat and ch 164 for Scrap Basket.

1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

3rd row: * Sc in next 3 sc, thread over, insert hook in next sc 2 rows below, draw loop through and up to height of row in work, (thread over, insert hook in same sc 2 rows below, draw loop through and up to height of row in work) 3 times; thread over and draw through all loops on hook (puff st made). Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

4th row: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

5th row: Sc in first sc, * make a puff st in next sc 2 rows below, sc in next 3 sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

6th row: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 3rd to 6th rows incl until piece measures 34 inches for Mat, or is long enough to cover depth for Basket, ending with 4th row.

For Scrap Basket: Sew narrow ends together and sl st closely around top and bottom.

Border for Mat:

1st rnd: Sc closely around, making 3 sc in each corner.

2nd to 5th rnds incl: Sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in center sc at each corner. Join. Break off at end of 5th rnd.

Block to measurements.
