Star Stitch
Star Stitch

Crochet star stitch is a stitch that is worked in multiple loops across the row. You make one "star" next to another across the row. There are rows of hdc stitch between the rows of stars. This stitch is also sometimes called the "marguerite stitch" or the "daisy stitch" and may also be known as a "spiked cluster". The latter is good to know because it gives us a visual of how each "star" is going to be formed by a cluster of "spikes", which is helpful to know because eventually, you'll be working between some of the spikes.

Star stitch crochet can be made of stars with a varying number of spikes, so you will find different instructions for different variations on this stitch. These directions are for making a five-spike star stitch, which is one of the most common variations. Learning to make this stitch will help you understand how to make any variation of the stitch.

Crochet star stitch has a beautiful thick texture and is great for dense projects, such as washcloths and winter blankets, but it can be used to make just about anything.

Instructions
Step 1
Step 1: Foundation Chain
Crochet a chain of any odd number to begin. This tutorial uses a foundation chain of 23 stitches.

Step 2: First Loop on Hook
Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook. Yarn over and pull a loop through.

Step 3: 6 Loops on Hook
Insert your hook into the next chain, yarn over and pull through. There are now two loops on the hook.

Continue to insert your hook into subsequent chains, yarning over and pulling through until there are six loops on your hook.

Step 4: Yarn Over, Pull Through
With six loops on your hook, yarn over one more time and pull through all six loops. This creates the "spikes" that make up your first star.

Step 5: First Star
Chain one. This finishes the star. It also creates an "eye" in the center of the star. You will be working into the eye so it's good to pay attention to where you are at this stage and get a feel for the stitch design.

Step 6: Begin Second Star
Now, insert your hook into the "eye" that you just made, as we were discussing. Yarn over and pull through. There will now be two loops on your hook.

Step 7: Insert Hook Into Spike
Now, insert your hook into the space between the two last "spikes" from the first "star". Yarn over and pull through. There will be three loops on your hook.

Step 8: Insert Hook Into Chain
Insert your hook into the same chain where the last stitch of the previous star was worked. Yarn over and pull through. There will now be four loops on your hook.

Step 9: Two More Loops
Insert your hook into the next chain, yarn over and pull through. Repeat in the next chain. This will give you six loops on your hook.

Step 10: Yarn Over, Pull Through
Repeat Step Four. So, yarn over and pull through all six loops on the hook. You are about to complete your second star in the row.

Step 11: Second Star
Repeat Step Five. When you chain one, you close your second star in the row and create the eye of that second star.

Step 12: Stitch Across Row
Repeat Steps 6-11 to make the next crochet star. Continue repeating the steps to continue making stars all the way across the row. When you get to the end, make one hdc in the last stitch.

Step 13: HDC Row
In between each row of star stitches, you will have rows of hdc stitches. Turn the work and chain 2, this counts as the first hdc stitch.

Step 14: 2 HDC
Crochet two hdc stitches into the eye of the next star.

Step 15: Complete HDC Row
2 hdc in the eye of each star across the row. When you get to the end, crochet 2 hdc in the final stitch.

Step 16: Next Row
Now it's time to make another row of crochet stars. You will be doing basically the same thing that you did before, except that you begin the process slightly differently. So, turn the work to begin the row and chain three.

Step 17: Insert Hook
Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook. Yarn over and pull through. There will now be two loops on the hook.

Step 18: Insert Hook Again
Insert your hook into the third chain from the hook. Yarn over and pull through. There will now be three loops on the hook.

Step 19: Draw Up Three More Loops
Insert your hook into each of the next three stitches, doing a yarn over and pull through in each so that you have six stitches on the hook.

Step 20: Yarn Over, Pull Through
Yarn over and pull through all six loops on the hook.

Step 21: Chain One
As you might have guessed by now, you chain one to close the first star of the second row of crochet stars. This creates the eye of the first star of this row.

Step 22: Row Two of Stars
You then proceed as normal across the row to create another row of stars. In other words, repeat Step Twelve.

Step 23: Free Pattern
Repeat steps 13-23 as many times as you want to continue the star stitch crochet pattern.
